Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is designed to refresh the appearance of the eyes by removing excess skin and addressing puffiness around the upper or lower eyelids. Because the eyes are often the first area to show signs of aging, blepharoplasty can create a more rested, youthful, and refreshed appearance while maintaining your natural expression.
Dr. Amra Olafson believes successful blepharoplasty should never create an “operated” appearance. Her approach focuses on preserving natural anatomy while restoring a brighter, more rejuvenated look. Traditionally, blepharoplasty involved removing a lot of fat, creating an aged hollowed out appearance, also known as A-frame deformity. Dr. Olafson uses a preservation technique to remove excess skin without creating an aged appearance.
Am I a Candidate for Blepharoplasty?
You may be a candidate for blepharoplasty if you are bothered by:
- Excess skin of the upper eyelids
- A tired or heavy appearance around the eyes
- Puffiness or bags beneath the eyes
- Difficulty applying makeup due to eyelid skin redundancy
- Visual obstruction from excess upper eyelid skin
- Signs of facial aging around the eyes
The best candidates are in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and desire a refreshed appearance rather than a dramatic change.
Your Consultation
During your consultation, Dr. Olafson will carefully evaluate your eyelid anatomy, facial proportions, skin quality, and aesthetic goals. She believes the most successful eyelid surgery results begin with a thorough understanding of each patient’s unique concerns.
Because every face ages differently, your treatment plan will be customized to your anatomy and desired outcome.
The Procedure
Blepharoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. Depending on your needs, surgery may involve the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.
Common goals of blepharoplasty include:
- Removing excess upper eyelid skin
- Reducing under-eye bags
- Creating a more open, refreshed appearance
- Improving facial harmony
- Restoring a youthful appearance around the eyes
The specific techniques used are tailored to each patient and designed to achieve natural, balanced results. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty can be done under local anesthesia for select patients.
Recovery
Following blepharoplasty, patients can expect temporary swelling and bruising that gradually improves over the first one to two weeks. Most patients return to work and social activities within one to two weeks.
Healing continues over several months as swelling resolves and scars mature. Dr. Olafson closely follows her patients throughout recovery to help ensure a smooth healing process.
