Breast Implant Removal
Breast implant removal, also known as explant surgery, is designed for patients who wish to remove their breast implants due to lifestyle changes, aesthetic preferences, implant-related concerns, or other personal reasons.
Dr. Amra Olafson believes explant surgery should be approached with the same level of planning and precision as breast augmentation.
Am I a Candidate for Breast Implant Removal?
You may be a candidate if you are interested in:
- Removing breast implants
- Changing aesthetic preferences
- Addressing implant complications
- Improving comfort
- Replacing aging or ruptured implants
- Restoring a more natural appearance
The best candidates are in good overall health and have realistic expectations regarding their outcome.
Your Consultation
During your consultation, Dr. Olafson will review your implant history, breast anatomy, skin quality, symptoms, and goals.
She believes successful outcomes begin with understanding each patient’s motivations and developing an individualized treatment plan.
The Procedure
Breast implant removal is typically performed as an outpatient procedure.
Common goals include:
- Removing breast implants
- Improving comfort
- Restoring a natural appearance
- Addressing implant-related concerns
- Improving breast shape when appropriate
- Enhancing overall body confidence
Some patients may require removal of the scar tissue surrounding the implant, known as a capsulectomy. This is most commonly considered in patients with capsular contracture, implant rupture, or other implant-related concerns. Whether a capsulectomy is recommended depends on your individual anatomy, symptoms, implant history, imaging findings when appropriate, and surgical goals and will be discussed in detail during your consultation.
Depending on your anatomy and goals, additional procedures such as a breast lift may also be recommended to optimize breast shape and contour following implant removal.
Recovery
Following surgery, patients can expect swelling and soreness that gradually improve over several weeks.
Most patients return to work and normal activities within one to two weeks if capsulectomy is not performed. Patients will require drains if capsule is removed.
